Uncertainty surrounds a report from New Zealand that Carter Holt Harvey intends to close its Kopu mill at Thames in the North Island.
It is reported that CHH has told employees of a proposal to close the mill following a review of the company's operations. The jobs of 145 people are at stake.
The Mayor of the Thames-Coromandel District Council Philippa Barriball says her council will do all it can to support sawmill workers faced with losing their jobs.
Efforts to contact Carter Holt Harvey have been unsuccessful.
Andrew Little from the Engineering, Printing and Manufacturing Union says workers are bewildered by the reports, because the mill increased production last year. He says even though Carter Holt Harvey claims the decision has not been finalised, the future is not looking good.
A clarification and a final decision are expected in two weeks.
