Federal Court Trial Dates Set on ‘Deceptive’ Plywood Case

17 April 2008
Federal Court proceedings brought against Jag Ply Pty Ltd and Peter Cranston Wintour by the Engineered Wood Products Association of Australasia (EWPAA) have been set down for trial in Brisbane for five days commencing September 1.
At a directions hearing in the Brisbane Federal Court on April 4, Judge Jeffrey Spender made a series of nine Orders governing the conduct of the matter up to and including commencement of the trial.
Spender suggested the possibility of the parties mediating prior to the end of July, but said if the matter was not resolved the trial would proceed, as scheduled, on 1 September.
The case centres on the assigning of a stress grade to plywood products that allegedly failed to meet Australian structural standards.

Australian Customs Investigates Paper Dumping

Following an application by the Australian pulp and paper industry, including Kimberly Clark, the Australian Customs Service has launched an investigation into alleged dumping and subsidisation of toilet paper from China and alleged dumping of toilet paper from Indonesia.
The Australian Plantation Industry and Paper Industry Council says sudsidisation and dumping causes material injury to the Australian industry through the loss of market share, price depression and suppression and reduced profit and reinvestment.
