Award Recognises Work Of John Tiddy

26 September 2007
The Australian Woodworking Industry Suppliers Association Inc. (AWISA Inc.) has announced the John Tiddy Memorial Award for woodworking industry apprentices throughout Australia and New Zealand.
The award commemorates the contribution of the late John Tiddy to the Australasian furniture and woodworking industries, and his contribution to the formation and running of AWISA Inc. and the biennial AWISA exhibitions.
The award is for six apprentices in the woodworking industry to receive all-expenses paid overnight trips to the AWISA 2008 exhibition, plus $2000 towards their training course fees.
Tiddy spent more than 48 years in the furniture hardware industry and was responsible for introducing many now familiar brand names to the Australasian market.
“He had a reputation as someone who brought innovative products to the attention of end users,” the chairman of AWISA Inc Aidan Jury said.
“John was always enthusiastic about new ideas and he was one of the people most responsible for the founding of the AWISA exhibitions. Indeed, he served as the association’s first chairman from 1986 to 1992, and remained on the committee for 14 more years until his death in 2006.”
Awards will be made to one apprentice from each of the following areas of Australasia: NSW/ACT, Queensland, Victoria/Tasmania, South Australia/Northern Territory, Western Australia, and New Zealand. Applicants must be between 18 and 29 years of age as at 31 December 2007, and must have completed at least two years of training through TAFE or a similarly accredited course. Their employment and training must be in a field covered by the AWISA exhibition such as furniture, kitchen or joinery manufacturing, cabinet making, or shop and office fitting.
Applicants must be of good character, and be highly regarded by their employer for their skill, knowledge, application to work, responsibility and innovation. They need not necessarily be the best trainee in their course, but must be acknowledged as a good all-round student who performs diligently and courteously. If there is something in the applicant’s personal background that makes them a more worthwhile recipient, this will be taken into account.
Judging will be conducted by a committee consisting of a representative of AWISA Inc., a representative of an end-user trade association, and a TAFE representative.
Application forms are available at www.awisa.com or by phoning AWISA Inc. (02) 9660 3467.
Applications close on 31 March 2008 and the winners will be announced by 31 May 2008.
