Tasmanian forests giant Gunns Limited has urged green groups to accept a court's rejection of a challenge to the company's proposed pulp mill development in the state’s north.
The Federal Court on 9 August dismissed a challenge by the Wilderness Society (WS) and business group Investors for the Future of Tasmania to the Federal Government's environmental assessment of the proposed $1.7 billion mill.
The WS says it is considering appealing the decision, comparing it to the early obstacles it faced in its ultimately successful campaign against the construction of the Franklin Dam in southwest Tasmania in the early 1980s.
Gunns executive chairman John Gay said the proposed mill met environmental guidelines. "I just hope that the greens now abide by the umpire's decision instead of costing everyone a lot of money," he said.
Hudson Expands In Queensland
Hudson Building Supplies has acquired the business of Gold Coast building materials supplier Blue Horizon.
Blue Horizon will work closely with Hudson’s existing branch at Nerang to supply builders on the Gold Coast and in northern New South Wales.
Blue Horizon will trade under the Hudson name, and will continue to be managed by Rob Neville.
“This is an exciting addition to Hudson’s five branches in southeast Queensland and a frame and truss plant in Brisbane that commenced operations at Browns Plains last month,” managing director John Simon said.
New Forest Fact Figures
A new website that will help educate young Australians and their teachers about the facts of sustainable management of forests has been developed by the National Association of Forest Industries (NAFI) and the National Forest Education and Awareness Network (NFEAS).
Launching the website on 8 August, the Minister for Forestry and Conservation Senator Eric Abetz said the online resource would counter the various misleading websites run by the Greens and their associates.
The website is located online at: www.australianforests.org.au

NZ Wood To Hit Regions
The landmark NZ Wood programme will be showcased to the forestry and wood industry in a series of road shows around in August – unveiling plans that bring the industry together behind a number of new initiatives to grow the industry and the market for wood.
“It’s vital that people from the industry attend and find out what NZ Wood is all about. This is a programme that can significantly grow the industry and the market for wood products,” says programme manager Geoff Henley.
The NZ Wood campaign involves research and development, public education, information on the use of wood as a building material, information on design using wood products, and promotion of plantation forests and wood in New Zealand.
The NZ Wood road-show presentations will demonstrate how businesses from across the industry can contribute to and benefit from the programme’s initiatives. The road-shows are the first in a series of campaigns that will involve all industry and the general public.
