The currency ended last week more than US11c down at about US77c from its peak of nearly US89c three weeks ago. An importer riding the currency market since the unit peaked would have to pay about A$82,200 more on a foreign currency invoice of US$500,000. Basil Payn of Travelex Commercial Foreign Exchange says businesses should estimate their foreign exchange spend for the next financial year, set a budget foreign exchange rate and maintain a conservative outlook on the currency market. Volatile conditions in global markets have caused the dollar decline and the currency movements will have hurt importers who had not hedged.
