Queensland Industry Seeks AFS CoC Certification
4 February 2008
Queensland’s $2.4 billion timber industry is set to pursue chain of custody certification (CoC) and product labelling under the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS). Timber Queensland is coordinating this program and has secured funding support from the Queensland Government to assist in establishing the CoC process for businesses processing logs from certified forests. Timber Queensland will provide audit services in conjunction with the Engineered Wood Products Association of Australasia (EWPAA). The initiative follows requests from developers, major builders, architects, specifiers and government agencies for legal, sustainably-grown and harvested timber after the launch last year of Timber Queensland’s Timber Buying Guide. Currently, Hyne has its araucaria (hoop pine) operations certified, Moxon Timbers has its cypress products certified and Bretts are pursuing certification for its cypress products. Timber Queensland expects this program to roll out in the first half of 2008. Inquiries to Jim Burgess or Colin MacKenzie at Timber Queensland on (07) 3254 1989.
