Australian Forester Gets Top Conservation Job

11 January 2008
Australian Forester Dr William (Bill) Jackson has been appointed Deputy Director-General of IUCN – the world’s umbrella organisation for conservation of natural resources (see www.iucn.org) based in Gland, Switzerland.
Jackson began his career in hardwood forest management in Dungog, NSW, and held various posts in the NSW Forestry Commission and then State Forests of NSW where he was deputy fire management officer. He also worked with the world-famous Nepal-Australia Community Forestry Project and has a PhD from the University of Western Sydney-Hawkesbury.
Jackson is a member of the Institute of Foresters of Australia and in June 2007 he presented the Max Jacobs Oration to the Australian and New Zealand Institute of Foresters.

Fires Threaten Forests In Victoria

Forest managers and more than 2000 volunteer fire fighters are on alert in Victoria as bush grasslands dry up under temperatures soaring into the 40s.
The high temperatures, strong northerly winds and low humidity have forced a total fire ban over much of the state.
A blaze that started in a state forest northeast of Swifts Creek on 2 January brings the total to 16 bushfires now burning in East Gippsland.
Department of Sustainability and Environment spokesman Stuart Ord said there were concerns that lightning strikes could continue ahead of higher temperatures predicted for the weekend.
"Some of the fires are in steep and forested country so it's difficult getting into them," Ord said.
