Willmott Wins Major NSW Wood Supply Tender
30 January 2008
Resource manager Willmott Forests Ltd has successfully tendered for the long-term purchase of the Monaro region’s plantation softwood sawlogs from Forests NSW. The timber supply agreement will provide the resource security to enable Willmott Timbers to construct a large scale, fully-integrated softwood timber processing facility at its Sandy Lane site in Bombala. The project will be developed in conjunction with Dongwha Australia Holdings Pty Ltd in a joint venture through a 50:50 ownership of Willmott Timbers. Chief executive of Willmott Forests Marcus Derham said the project provided a long-term, whole-of-tree solution for the entire Bombala softwood plantation estate, with a focus on local processing, value adding and residue utilisation. Derham said the new $60 million processing facility would deliver significant additional revenues to the joint venture partners. It would also generate major jobs and other benefits for the Bombala region and provide a solid platform for flow-on investment in the future. Detailed planning for the project is well advanced, with production from the new complex expected to commence during the second half of 2009. The joint venture parties have existing markets and the capacity to expand sawn timber production profitably from the new project. Willmott Forests, with $240 million in assets, is an integrated forestry company that plants, manages, harvests, processes and supplies plantation timber products for domestic and export markets. The company manages 35,000 ha of commercial plantations throughout New South Wales and Victoria and produces a wide range of softwood timber products from its timber processing operations in Bombala. Dongwha Holdings is a global manufacturer of wood materials with timber processing and marketing operations in Korea, Hong Kong, New Zealand, Malaysia, Australia, Japan and the United States.
