Sound Footing for Pope Benedict

14 May 2008
CERTIFIED plantation radiata flooring plywood has been chosen as a safe and structurally-sound platform for Pope Benedict XVI when he delivers the Papal Mass at World Youth Day in Sydney on July 20.
More than 1000 sq m of Carter Holt Harvey’s 21mm DD Ecoply plywood will be used in the platform’s structure at Randwick Racecourse.
Engineered wood products have defined and standardised structural properties. Their strength and stiffness characteristics are therefore totally predictable. The additional benefit of a product certification brand, such as the EWPAA/JAS-ANZ product certification, also means that they are highly reliable.
World Youth Day events from 15-20 July will centre on the historic racecourse, which will host the largest gathering of people every assembled in Sydney.
“We needed a site that could accommodate up to 600,000 people,” said Cardinal George Pell, Archbishop of Sydney, who chairs the organising committee.
Cardinal Pell said the Final Mass at previous World Youth Days had sometimes drawn more than one million people.

FWPA Appoints New Managing Director

A well-qualified forester has been appointed new managing director of Forest and Wood Products Australia, taking the helm from Dr Glen Kile from 2 June.
Ric Sinclair has a Bachelor of Forestry and Masters of Business Administration and is currently manager, water harvesting at Origin Energy.
FWPA chairman Ron Adams said Sinclair's technical, business and marketing experience would be of great value with the inclusion of promotion as part of FWPA's charter.
Adams thanked Dr Kile for his contribution during the past six years to the Forest and Wood Products Research and Development Corporation (FWPRDC), and the transition to FWPA. Kile has agreed to assist Sinclair and FWPA up to the first FWPA annual general meeting in early October.
Sinclair has a Bachelor of Science (Forestry) from the Australian National University and Masters of Business Administration from the University of British Columbia, Canada. He worked in the forestry industry in Canada for five years before returning to Australia as an economic and policy analyst for the National Association of Forest Industries in 1992. He then became marketing manager of office papers, including the Reflex brand, for Amcor/PaperlinX Ltd.
More recently, Sinclair has worked with the publicly-listed horticultural grower and processor company Chiquita Brands as business development manager and as a business strategy consultant before joining KH Foods in 2003, where he was responsible for a number of strategic initiatives.
