NAFI Promotes AFS In China

21 June 2007

Representatives of the National Association of Forest Industries (NAFI) are in China to boost relationships on timber certification issues.
Chief executive Catherine Murphy, NAFI staff, representatives of AFS Ltd, and consultants from GHD Ltd are promoting the development of their own forest certification standard. This will be used as the basis for progressing mutual government recognition of forestry certification schemes in both countries.
“Australia’s forest industry is world-class and meets strict environmental standards,” Murphy said. “Around nine million hectares of native forests and plantations are legally certified and sustainably managed through the Australian Forestry Standard (AFS).”
The Australian delegation hopes to further develop trade relationships through the Australia-China Agricultural Cooperation Agreement (ACACA).
“We will represent the Australian forestry industry in developing mutual government to government recognition of the AFS and the Chinese forestry standard,” Murphy said.
“Having both the AFS and Chinese standard mutually recognised will lead to stronger economic ties with China and will create commercial opportunities for both nations.”
