Gay Forced to Close Gunns AGM
26 November 2007
The annual general meeting of Gunns Limited ended in chaos on 22 November and executive chairman John Gay was forced to close the meeting before official business had been completed. After the meeting closed, an attendee Phil Pullinger claimed he had been assaulted by a shareholder. He reported the incident to police. It came after a barrage of questions from anti-pulp mill shareholders had prompted Mr Gay to cease taking questions and close the meeting. About 40 protesters gathered outside the offices of Gunns Ltd to voice opposition to plans for a $1.7 billion pulp mill in the Tamar Valley. The protesters waived placards and chanted, calling for a halt to the mill, as shareholders drove into the Gunns complex past a small group of company and police security. Journalists had been barred from attending the meeting.
