Kempsey Sawmill Achieves AFS Accreditation9 November 2007 AST’s high quality Australian native timber flooring now carries the certification mark, which provides consumers with the assurance that they are buying wood from sustainably-managed forests. The accreditation was announced by federal Forestry Minister Senator Eric Abetz. Chief executive of the National Association of Forest Industries Catherine Murphy congratulated the innovative north coast timber company, which employs over 80 staff. “Buying certified Australian timber means consumers are not potentially buying wood from overseas where forestry practices are can often be illegal and unsustainable,” she said. “As the world grows more and more carbon conscious, it is important that consumers are aware of the environmental benefits of using timber products that capture and store carbon, by comparison with other high carbon emitting products such as concrete and steel.” By combining certification with the use of solar energy to power its timber drying kilns, AST has demonstrated that it is one of Australia’s most environmentally friendly timber companies.
