Merlo Award Presented to Thorry Gunnersen

14 November 2007

One of Australia’s leading timber industry businessmen Thorry Gunnersen has been awarded the highly respected Harry A. Merlo award by the World Forestry Centre (WFC). The award was presented during the WFC annual general meeting in Melbourne on 13 November.
Gunnersen is a past chairman of the WFC board of the World Forestry Centre, based in Portland, Oregon, and has been a director representing Australia. He has been chairman of the Forest and Wood Products Development Corporation (FWPRDC) and was a founding member and past president of the National Association of Forest Industries.
Gunnersen is a director of several private companies, including Midway Pty Ltd, a plantation owner and manager and woodchip processor and exporter. He heads Gunnersens Timbermark, the largest independent Australian-owned distributor of wood-based products.
The company has been owned by the Gunnersen family since it was founded in 1879 and today is guided by brothers Thorry (executive chairman) and Peter (executive director). It employs more than 250 people nationally and overseas.
Thorry Gunnersen is also an accomplished sailor, completing 13 Sydney to Hobart Yacht Races, and has competed in the UK Fastnet races.
Founded in 1964, the World Forestry Centre is a non-profit educational institution. Importantly, it also has an outstanding international forestry fellowship program, which has attracted several Australian foresters to spend 12 months in the USA conducting applied research relevant to key forestry issues in Australia.
