Federal Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull is under growing pressure to release a scientific report on the proposed Tasmanian pulp mill.
Turnbull is expected to release the commonwealth chief scientist Dr Jim Peacock's environmental report into the controversial Tasmanian pulp mill later this week, but only after announcing his decision on its future.
Either approving or rejecting the mill would be highly sensitive ahead of the imminent federal election campaign, with marginal seats in Tasmania and possibly Mr Turnbull's own Sydney electorate at stake.
Turnbull received Dr Peacock's report more than a week ago and says he accepts its recommendations. His decision is the last regulatory hurdle for the $2 billion mill proposed by Gunns Ltd for the Tamar valley in Tasmania's northeast.
Turnbull’s department has discussed Peacock's report with Gunns and this has angered Australian Greens leader Senator Bob Brown who says the Government has given Gunns’ chief executive John Gay an insider's privilege denied to the Tamar Valley's 100,000 residents.
