Turnbull Assess Pulp Mill Report

25 September 2007

The eagerly-awaited report into the Gunns pulp mill proposal in Tasmania has been delivered to federal Environment Minister Malcolm Turnbull.
Turnbull said his final decision would not be far off now that he had the report prepared by the chief scientist.
“We will publish it after we have digested it and reviewed it,” he said in a radio interview. “That won't be too long after that and then I will make a decision shortly thereafter."
Gunns has proposed to build the $2 billion pulp mill in the Tamar Valley, north of Launceston, prompting vigorous opposition.
The Tasmanian Government has approved the project, leaving only Turnbull to give the final go-ahead.
He has delayed his own decision until the release of a report compiled by chief scientist Jim Peacock who is assessing the possible effects the proposal could have on marine waters and migratory and threatened species.
